Wow, never thought I'd have a game that was "almost" snowed out in Alabama ! I've played in games where it started snowing but even in New York and in college in Vermont I never played in weather like we had today ! This morning our Hoover JV team played Houston HS from Memphis, Tennessee. Since Houston came a long way and stayed over last night after playing Mountain Brook, we decided there was no reason to cancel the games today. We shoveled the football stadium turf and did the best we could for lines but the JV game was rough. The snow was falling hard and the wind was blowing, the snow was accumulating so quickly that you couldn't even see where we had shoveled. JV did great though and fought through the weather for an 8-1 victory. Not sure how the outcome would have been if it didn't snow, I think it would have been about the same. Once the JV game ended we had about 45 minutes until varsity played and thank goodness it stopped snowing. Houston requested to do a running clock but by half time the sun was coming out and by the end of the game the turf was almost clear. Varsity jumped out to a 6-0 lead and looked pretty sharp even in the bad conditions. The final ended up 8-2 but overall a great opening day win. It was nice to see Hoover walk away from confrontations, there were two unsportsmanlike conduct calls and during both incidents the Hoover players just walked away. Houston was frustrated, the snow and the cold was getting to everyone and I think both teams wish we had a nice sunny day to see how the outcome could have been different. Conway lead the way with 4 goals, Sly had a couple nice saves and I think our long stick middies, Fikes and Clay Oliver did an awesome job. We are scheduled to play Vestavia on Tuesday who has beat John Carroll and Homewood but lost to Spain Park. I'm hoping Monday and Tuesday are sunny because unless there is major drying going on the next few days I think our field may be closed for the week but we'll see. After snow in Alabama I guess anything is possible !
